LL.M. Program in International Intellectual Property Law

Chicago-Kent College of Law is proud to offer a one-year LL.M. in International Intellectual Property Law, the first such degree to be offered by a U.S. law school.

With this unique program, U.S. and foreign attorneys holding first degrees in law can specialize in one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing legal fields.

Offered as a one-year, full-time program, the LL.M. in International Intellectual Property Law requires a graduate seminar with thesis and intensive study of a range of courses dealing with both intellectual property and international law topics.

To earn the one-year LLM degree in International Intellectual Property Law ("IIP LLM"), students will be required to complete 24 credit hours total, 19 credits of which must be from the required courses below, including the written thesis (estimated length 30 pages). The required courses must be taken for a grade (A, B, C, etc.) unless the course is offered only Pass/Fail. Outside the 19 required credits below, students may choose any other courses to meet the remaining 5 credits necessary to graduate.

Requirements for completion of the IIP LL.M. (24 credits)

1. Legal Writing Seminar for International Intellectual Property Law LLM with a written thesis (3 credits);
2. International Intellectual Property Law (3 credits);
3. Introduction to American Legal System (2 credits) (waived for U.S. JD grads);
4. 8 credit hours from "Group A" and 3 from "Group B"; and
5. 5 credit hours consisting of any other courses chosen by student.

1. Copyright Law (3 credits)
2. Patent Law (3 credits)
3. Trademarks and Unfair Competition Law (3 credits)
4. Trade Secrets Law (3 credits)
5. Comparative Copyright Law (2 credits)**
6. International Patent Law (2 credits)**
7. International Trademark Law (1 or 2 credits)**
8. Other designated courses (ask program director)

Group B : International Courses (3 credits)

1. Comparative Law (3 credits)
